Located at the base of Kyoto’s western mountain range, Arashiyama is often considered the city’s second main tourist area after Higashiyama. This beautiful district impresses with its green hills and majestic mountains in the background, creating unforgettable scenery.
Arashiyama is especially popular during cherry blossom season, which lasts from March to April. The area is home to famous attractions such as Tenryu-ji Temple and the Bamboo Grove, drawing tourists from around the world. Walking through Arashiyama allows you to enjoy stunning nature and fresh air. While popular routes can get crowded, small streets and secluded corners offer a quiet and peaceful atmosphere.
This area is particularly suitable for cycling, which allows you to explore its beauty more deeply. Although Arashiyama is not a primary choice for accommodation among foreign visitors, you can still find several charming ryokans that let you enjoy traditional Japanese culture and ambiance.
What’s the catch?
Arashiyama is located fairly far from central Kyoto – about 30 minutes away. The main street and Togetsukyo Bridge can be crowded with tourists from early morning until late evening.
